Syzygium Luehmannii

Lilly pilly, or riberry, is a tree that can reach upwards of thirty metres in the wild. It forms small fruits that are 12-15 millimetres in length. The fruit can range from a bright pink to magenta. It is native to sub-tropical areas of Queensland and New South Wales.

There are historic references from New South Wales and Queensland of lilly pilly being regularly eaten raw as a snack in Aboriginal communities, and suggestions the pulp was also applied to sore ears. It was one of the first edible plants to be noted during Captain Cook’s visit to Australia in 1770. It is also reported to be one of the first fruits consumed as jam or cordials by early colonists of Australia. Lilly pillies have high levels of folate (100g contains 50% of the recommended daily intake), antioxidants, calcium , magnesium, vitamin E and manganese.

Riberry has a clove and spice flavour and makes an excellent processing and culinary fruit. The fruit can be eaten straight from the tree, but these days is not generally consumed fresh. It is used in both sweet and savoury products including jams, conserves, chutney, relishes, ice cream, yoghurt, chocolates, cakes and sauces for meat dishes.
