Cherax Destructor

The common yabby is an Australian freshwater crustacean. It occurs across most of Victoria, western New South Wales, south-western Queensland and eastern South Australia. Yabbies are very hardy and can tolerate poor water conditions and long periods of drought. They burrow deep into the river bed or dam wall in order to stay moist. This burrowing causes damage to dam walls and levee banks, which is how they got their name ‘destructor’. Yabbies range in colour from brown and green to pale blue and have mottled claws.

Shellfish in great numbers were eaten by First Australians. Remains of Aboriginal shellfish feasts, known as middens, can be found in various sites around Australia’s coast. Yabbies are one of the Australian native foods that were immediately embraced by European Australians.
